Proposed Sexuality Education
in Washoe County
Current Nevada law states that school districts must provide instruction on acquired immune deficiency syndrome, human reproductive system, related communicable diseases and sexual responsibility. (NRS 389.065)
In Washoe County, the Sex, Health and Responsibility Education Advisory (S.H.A.R.E.) Committee is proposing new curriculum that expands far beyond what the law requires.
A majority of the information the curriculum provides is biased, skewed, and presented to promote one ideology. An ideology a majority of parents in Washoe County would oppose.
Below are a few of the objectionable additions:
  • References to Planned Parenthood as a resource for students.
  • “Birth control basics,” including “emergency contraception” which is the “morning after pill” (also known as an early chemical abortion).
  • Lists the drug stores where the morning after pill can “easily” be obtained, without parental knowledge or consent.
  • Condom use demonstrations.
  • Encourages students to approach adults other than their parents to discuss these controversial topics the curriculum covers.
  • Promotes the “Gender Bread” person, a term used to promote the idea that gender isn’t binary, but rather a spectrum. Your biology doesn’t determine your gender but your feelings do.
  • Beginning in 6th grade instructs the teacher to use the pronoun “they” vs. “him” or “her” as well as referring to a woman or girl as ‘someone with a vulva’ in order to be inclusive to all genders.
